<![CDATA[The Magical Monte]]>Sat, 13 Aug 2016 15:19:10 GMThttp://erikolsenpictures.com/blog/the-magical-monte
Eric Dierks was invited to ride the first ever horse on TIEC's new AEC cross country course on August 11, 2016 and this is what he had to say about the his experience:
"Yesterday (August 11, 2016) I had the opportunity to gallop a track for the first time on what felt like world class footing at #tryoninternationalequestriancenter. More coverage will be out soon but I thought I'd beat them to the punch so you can hear it straight from the horses mouth. After galloping a portion of the track I could honestly say Mark has figured out the formula for beautiful footing. I was skeptical that the footing was either going to be too premature where I'd be slipping everywhere, or too bouncy with the talk of synthetic ground. It was neither. The grass was super thick, the root system is deep and the footing is firm. I galloped at various speeds and through turns to test the stability of the footing. There was no slipping nor did I ever punch in deep or saw grass flying up behind me. This is going to be a Championships course, so buckle up and be prepared. My horse Monte was wonderful with the drone flying about so there will be some video out soon as well so you can see for yourself. The future for Eventing at TIEC is really bright and expanding. These guys not only work fast, they work smart."

<![CDATA[March 22nd, 2016]]>Tue, 22 Mar 2016 16:04:38 GMThttp://erikolsenpictures.com/blog/march-22nd-2016
Biltmore Estate is a large (8,000 acre) private estate and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore House, the main house on the estate, is a Châteauesque-styled mansion built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States.

Vanderbilt commissioned prominent New York architect
Richard Morris Hunt, who had previously designed houses for various Vanderbilt family members, to design the house in the Châteauesque style, using French Renaissance chateaus that Vanderbilt and Hunt had visited in early 1889, including Château de BloisChenonceau and Chambord in France and Waddesdon Manor in England, as inspiration with their steeply pitched roofs, turrets and sculptural ornamentation. Hunt sited the four-story Indiana limestone-built home to face east with a 375-foot facade to fit into the mountainous topography behind. The facade is asymmetrically balanced with two projecting wings connecting to the entrance tower with an open loggia to the left side and a windowed arcade to the right which held the Winter Garden that was fashionable during the Victorian era. The entrance tower contains a series of windows with decorated jambs that extend from the front door to the most decorated dormer at Biltmore on the fourth floor. The carved decorations include trefoils, flowing tracery, rosettes and at prominent lookouts, gargoyles. The large gargoyles are purely for decoration instead of their normal use to direct water away from a building. The staircase is one of the more prominent features of the east facade, with its three-story, highly decorated winding balustrade with carved statues of St. Louis and Joan of Arc by the Austrian-born architectural sculptor Karl Bitter.

<![CDATA[A Ken Cook Remembrance & Hospice of The Carolina Foothills Fundraiser]]>Sat, 08 Aug 2015 23:33:15 GMThttp://erikolsenpictures.com/blog/a-ken-cook-remembrance-hospice-of-the-carolina-foothills-fundraiser
A Ken Cook Remembrance & Hospice of The Carolina Foothills Fundraiser was held on June 28th, Ken's 85th Birthday, at Overmountain Vineyards, Tryon, NC.

Overmountain Vineyards hosted a very special fundraiser for Hospice of the Carolina Foothills as a Remembrance Celebration for Ken Cook. The fundraiser, held on June 28, was to have been his 85th birthday.

About 150 people came together that day. Many were family and close friends of Ken’s who came to eulogize him but many also showed up in support of our wonderful local Hospice group. Ticket sales and a silent auction of some of Ken’s personal items plus a large array of gifts donated from local businesses earned over $7,000 which was presented to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills last week by Ken’s daughter and fundraising organizer, Link Cook Cross.

During the celebration, guests gathered on Overmountain Vineyard’s new patio to partake in a very special dove release by LJ Meyers. Eighty-five doves were released to signify the (almost) number of years Ken was alive.

Following the dove release, guests were lulled by the music of Gigi Dover & the Big Love who began with One Heart . Shortly after music started, BBQ from Asheville’s own Doc Brown’s Food Truck was served and then the music continued. Birthday cake was served as we sang to Ken and many of the others who shared his June birthday. The evening ended with a spectacular sunset and Gigi singing Chasing Sunshine.

Overmountain Vineyards and Link Cross wish to express deep thanks and gratitude to all who came out in support of Hospice and shared in the laughter and tears as we celebrated a life that was lived fully!
